Vitamin D trial may provide relief for psoriasis sufferers

Researchers at the Vitamin D Research Centre at Massey University in New Zealand want to determine whether vitamin D is an effective treatment for psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory, non-contagious disease of the skin which affects one in every fifty adults. There are many common treatments for psoriasis sufferers including, creams and lotions, injections, pills, and light therapy. Unfortunately these treatments come at a high cost and can cause other health side effects.

Participants will be randomly assigned to take either a 100,000 IU vitamin D3 supplement or a placebo once a month for a year. During 5 appointments throughout the study, psoriasis and vitamin D status will be assessed, as well as the participants’ quality of life.

The researchers are looking for 112 plague-type psoriasis sufferers aged 18 or older living in the Auckland area. They are recruiting people with psoriasis in the active phase, stable for the past two months. Participants will not need a doctors’ referral, they will be screened by dermatologists before acceptance into the trial.
