RCT shows vitamin D supplementation helps lower blood pressure

Research presented at the European Society of Hypertension meeting in London shows that vitamin D supplementation can help lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension.

Danish researchers have carried out a randomized controlled, double-blind trial following 112 patients who visited the Holstebro Hospital in Denmark.

Initial vitamin D serum levels were tested, 92 patients were vitamin D deficient. The patients were given a vitamin D supplement or placebo over the course of 5 months.

The researchers found a significant reduction of central systolic blood pressure (measured at the aorta) when compared to the placebo group: systolic reduced by 6.8mmHg and diastolic reduced by 1.7mmHg. They also found a slight reduction in ambulatory blood pressure (measured in the arm).

The researchers recognize that this is a small study and future research is needed.
