Norway Food Safety Authority release new vitamin D guidelines

The Norway Food Safety Authority has concluded that the vitamin D daily recommended intake (RDI) should be doubled from 400 to 800 IU/day for the whole population.

Currently Norwegians are recommended to take 400 IU/day for children older than two, adolescents, and adults, with adults over the age of 75 supplementing with 800 IU/day. As of now, less than 50% of Norway’s population achieves these recommendations.

“To ensure intake of 20 microgram [800 IU] vitamin D per day in elderly, a daily dosage of 20 microgram from food supplements is justified,” the NSFA explained. “If the maximum limit for vitamin D in supplements is increased to 20 microgram per daily dosage, all age groups including elderly above 75 years can cover the recommended intake without any risk of exceeding UL.”
