New Zealand researchers to lead MS, vitamin D trial

Researchers in New Zealand are taking part in a large clinical trial investigating whether vitamin D can help prevent multiple sclerosis (MS).

The trial will include 240 participants with early stage MS in Australia and New Zealand to test how vitamin D may influence the progression of the disease.

Dr Deborah Mason, MBChB, FRACP, reports that the prevalence of MS in New Zealand is high compared to the rest of the world and appears to be increasing, largely in women.

“The whole aim has to be to prevent disability before it occurs,” she explains.

The research will begin this month and continue for 2 years. MS Research Australia has pledged $3.5 million towards the study.
