New survey finds most parents in the United Kingdom are unaware of vitamin D requirements for children

A new poll conducted by the Vitamin D Mission campaign has found that the majority of parents in the United Kingdom are unaware about the necessity and requirements of vitamin D for their children.

The Vitamin D Mission is a public health campaign recently launched to help decrease the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in children under five years old in the United Kingdom. The campaign is sponsored by the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Cow & Gate, Dlux and Kelloggs.

The Vitamin D Mission recently conducted an online survey to determine how much information and knowledge parents had regarding the importance of vitamin D for their children. This online survey was distributed and completed by 2,000 parents who had children under the age of five.

The survey revealed that 77% of parents were unaware of the vitamin D requirements for their children, and 60% were not concerned about the health impacts of being deficient in vitamin D.

Additionally, 20% of the parents did not know that the United Kingdom Department of Health recently stated that children under five years old are a population at very high risk for vitamin D deficiency.

“Many parents are still not getting the message about this vitamin and its importance for child health,” said Dr. Benjamin Jacobs, a pediatrician at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. “I see first-hand the health impacts of low levels of vitamin D in the UK.”
