New study underway to determine vitamin D’s role in the health of young adult women

The Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia is launching the largest study of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

The study, called Safe-D, is enrolling women living in Victoria, Australia between the ages of 16 and 25 years old. Researchers conducting the study hope to determine how vitamin D relates to a variety of health outcomes. These include muscle and bone health, mental health, and allergies, among other areas.

Participants in this study will be asked to complete a questionnaire, monitor their sun exposure habits, and visit the study center for health checks.

“In Australia, musculoskeletal disorders cause more disability than any other group of medical conditions, costing the economy $9.15 billion a year,” said one researcher of the Safe-D study, Dr. John Wark. “This is why we are focusing on young women in the hope that we can intervene early, preventing potential ill-health, economic loss and premature death.”

The project aims to lead towards better education, policies, and the improvement of the lives of Australian women.
