New study finds vitamin D related to sleep quality in those with lupus

In a new study, researchers have found that vitamin D may play a role in the quality of sleep in patients with lupus.

Sleep disorders are very common in people with lupus. While the mechanism for this remains unclear, one survey found that 50-60% of lupus patients reported having trouble sleeping.

Vitamin D may relate to sleep quality in the general population. Past research has found that vitamin D deficiency may increase the risk of certain sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea.

The relationship between vitamin D and sleep led researchers out of Iran to conduct a study to see if vitamin D was related to sleep quality specifically in patients with lupus.

They recruited 63 women who had lupus. The researchers recorded their vitamin D levels, disease activity, disease damage, psychological state, and sleep quality.

To measure sleep quality, the researchers used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). A lower score on the PSQI indicates good sleep quality and a higher score indicates poor sleep quality.

The researchers found that vitamin D levels were significantly related to PSQI scores. The researchers called for future trials to confirm their results and to determine if any mechanisms exist.
