Meta-analysis reports vitamin D deficiency increases the odds of developing anemia

Anemia is a condition in which an individual does not have adequate red blood cells to carry enough oxygen to the tissues, resulting in tiredness and weakness.

Some studies have found an inverse relationship between vitamin D status and anemia. Researchers recently conducted a meta-analysis of seven studies to provide more insight on the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and anemia.

Data from a total of 5,183 participants was included in the meta-analysis. Vitamin D deficiency was associated with an increased incidence of anemia. Participants who were vitamin D deficient had over two times the odds of having anemia.

The researchers summarized their findings,

“Our outcomes showed that VDD increased the risk of developing anemia. More research is warranted to clarify an understanding of the association between VDD and risk of anemia.”
