Kellogg’s fortify cereal with vitamin D

The Kellogg Company of Ireland recently announced their plan to fortify children and family cereals with vitamin D.

Vitamin D deficiency is a public health problem for adults and children in Ireland, among the rest of the world. The Kellogg Company is implementing the fortification to deal with the public health problem of vitamin D deficiency.

The Irish Universities Nutrition Alliance reports 9 in 10 children do not receive the recommended daily intake of vitamin D, which is 200IU/day in Ireland.

During the winter and fall months in Ireland people rely mainly on supplements and food sources to maintain adequate vitamin D levels. Because many do not take supplements, and maintaining adequate levels through natural food sources is extremely difficult, fortification is a great alternative.

Kellogg’s cereals will be fortified with about 170IU/100g, increasing daily intake by about 25%. Kellogg’s cereals are consumed in about 75% of Irish households. Supplementing a food source which is a daily staple in many children and adult diets will hopefully greatly reduce vitamin D deficiency in Ireland.
