Finnish University to re-analyze vitamin D supplements

Last week, researchers from The University of Finland revealed that a majority of vitamin D supplements the university tested contained significantly less vitamin D compared with what they advertized.

Within the next few weeks, the University of Finland will be re-analyzing the supplements acquired from chemists, shops, and online stores. The supplements will be analyzed using the same methods as before. Other accredited laboratories will be analyzing the supplements as well.

Professor Tomi-Pekka Tuomainen reassures the public that the University’s results are accurate, although, the pre-treatment the pills undergo could affect the results.

Of the reports the vitamin manufacturers provided explaining the contents of the supplements, some of the results match, while many supplement reports diverged greatly. Tuomainen wonders if the differences may be accounted to the analysis the university conducted. Some manufacturers have not yet released their vitamin reports.

“There was variation within the results. The biggest incongruence between a manufacturer’s report and university findings was about 30 percent,” Tuomainen told YLE Uutiset news.

He points out that the vitamin levels may be affected by the supplements storage conditions and time.
