D deficiency and depression in children with cystic fibrosis

Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency is associated with depression in children with cystic fibrosis, according to research published last month in Psychosomatics.

Researchers at the State University of New York at Buffalo conducted a cross-sectional study assessing vitamin D status and depressive symptoms in 38 children with cystic fibrosis ages 7-17 years. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI), with scores above 12 suggesting significant symptoms of depression.

The authors report that 59% of the children had vitamin D levels < 30 ng/ml, while 28% of participants were considered to have depressive symptoms on the CDI.  Serum vitamin D was negatively associated with CDI scores (p<0.001). The participants with vitamin D levels < 30 ng/ml reported significantly more depressive symptoms (p<0.001).

Of course, association does not prove causation. The researchers state that the findings do warrant additional research with large sample sizes and further confirmation of depressive symptoms.
