Vitamin D2 is vitamin D that is derived from plant sources, such as mushrooms. Vitamin D3 is vitamin D that humans evolved to naturally produce in the skin. It is also available in small amounts in some food sources such as salmon and eggs.

There is some research to suggest that vitamin D3 is slightly more beneficial than D2 because it is the form that humans evolved to produce and use. However, vitamin D2 is still effective and a good supplement choice for people who do not consume animal products such as vegetarians and vegans.
