I was diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency last month, with a level 9.6 ng/ml. The doctor has prescribed 60,000 IU cholecalciferol tablets, to be taken once a week. Is this okay? Also should it be taken after a meal or at any time? Can it be taken at the same time as my daily calcium supplement?

    We do recommend taking Vitamin D on a daily basis but taking 60,000iu of D3 once a week is fine. Eventually you will be taking a “maintenance” dosage and I would then recommend a daily rather than weekly dosage. If you would like to take it daily now, that 60,000iu translates to about 8-9000iu a day.
    It should be taken with a snack or meal that contains some fat for better absorption. You can take it with the calcium and other vitamins and minerals.
    If you take Vitamin D, and are low in magnesium, you may start to have symptoms. I highly recommend that you read http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/about-vitamin-d/vitamin-d-and-other-vitamins-and-minerals/, it talks about magnesium there. It is very important.
    I do not know what Vitamin D level your doctor thinks is adequate but we here at the VDC recommend reaching a level of 50ng/ml. This is a healthy level. Below 40-50ng/ml and you have an increased risk of cancer and autoimmune diseases.
    Most average weight people will need 5000iu a day as a maintenance dosage.
