I am in my 6th week of taking 10,000iu for vitamin D deficiency. My level was 28ng/ml. I have symptoms of depression and muscle weakness. How long of supplementing until I feel relieved of my symptoms?

    I am not a doctor or scientist, just a member of the VDC. The only thing I can do is suggest things to try.
    Have you read http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/about-vitamin-d/vitamin-d-and-other-vitamins-and-minerals/. It is very important! You really need to make sure you are getting all of those Vitamins and Minerals. Most people are magnesium deficient and you need a lot to process Vitamin D. (Just do not get magnesium OXIDE.)
    Just the other day at http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/blog/dear-dr-cannell-vitamin-d-and-k2-for-depression/ was a person who wrote in about depression. You need to read this also. Apparently K2 is also very much for brain health. So you may be “lacking” one of these things and that is why nothing has changed.
    After that Dr. Cannell once wrote that for depression you may need up to 50,000iu a day. I would make sure I tackle the Vitamins and Minerals first. If that does not help then you may want to increase the Vitamin D. Maybe not start with the 50,000iu but go to 15 or 20,000iu first. If you had said that your muscle issues had gotten better but not the depression than maybe I would have said try more Vitamin D first.

    I have been supplementing vitamin D for almost eight weeks now. I take a new blood test this Monday. I’m pretty sure that my levels are normal now. I still have fatigue, brain fog, and muscle weakness. What is the next step for me if I still have symptoms, but my levels are now normal?

    I hope you took the co-factors!
    You did not mention the “brain fog” the first time around.
    Did you ever have your thyroid levels tested? See if you can talk someone into doing a TSH (that will not be a problem) AND a Free T4 AND a Free T3 AND Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) (looks for antibodies), AND Thyroglobulin antibody (TGAb). The last two indicate autoimmune attack.

    I have no thyroid issue. I’ve tried all blood work and vitamin D has been the only result being low. I don’t know where to go from here.

    Sorry but most doctors only do one test for hypothyroidism and that is the TSH test. They call it the “gold standard” for detecting hypothyroidism. Unfortunately the blood level range for it is wrong. It usually goes from 0.4 – 4.5. and there is MUCH evidence that it should be lowered to 0.4 – 2.5. Hashimoto’s disease sometimes only shows on the antibody testing I listed above, meanwhile your TSH test is so called normal. Even the FT4 and FT3 ranges are “badly” scewed.

    Naw, I went to an endocrinologist who knew his stuff who did the thyroid blood work and has checked for hashimotos too. My thyroid is fine. Do you know if it takes a little time while having vitamin D levels normal for the symptoms to go away or are the symptoms gone instantly once your levels are out of the insufficient range? How long do I need to wait until my symptoms are gone?

    I would have thought you would have seen some kind of improvement by now even if it was just a little. If your levels have not really increased then you will have to take more Vitamin D and then see what happens in regards to symptoms.
    So I do read a lot of books and do internet research about hypothyroidism. Two things I suggest. One I would get a copy of the thyroid blood work and see where you fall in the ranges. Second I read once someone that did not show any thyroid problems on any blood work. (I think it was Mary Shomon but I do not remember.) The doctor said well “there is nothing else I can do except do a “needle aspiration” of the thyroid.” Doctor thought she would say “no” and she said “do it”! That is how they found her thyroid problem when all else failed! I have seen antibody levels “higher then the lab range recommends”, that doctors then say ” Oh but the figure is not high enough to cause a problem”. Well then why are there “ranges”?

    Oh yes, I have actually had a little improvement with my depression. That has been maybe a week ago…. I’ve had no more improvement since then. The endocrinologist I saw knew his stuff lol. He was very smartand too expensive for me to see again. He did an examination of my thyroid and blood work as well. He determined that i have zero indication of having any thyroid disorder.

    Hey

    I had this strange feeling in my entire body that happened two days ago. It was like my posture was improving. My shoulder and back muscles felt relaxed. I gained a lot of relief, but my posture still has not finished all of the way yet. Today, I am taking blood work. What are the vitamins I should request my doctor to test for other than vitamin D?     I can tell. My muscles are improving with my depression. I get really good moments during the day when the fatigue begins to slowly lift and my body becomes strong. I wake up each morning feeling better and better. I wish for this all to finish faster, but there is nothing that I can do, but wait. Also, IAW I appreciate all of your responses to help and I’m sure everyone else does as well. Thanks a bunch, man.

    What is the average full recovery time? I start my third month supplementing 10kiu daily on December 7. I have probably been sufficient for quite a few years.

    IAW, could you give me research with vitamin d deficiency on poor posture? I’m wondering if my weak muscles are due to vitamin D deficiency. I get my new vitamin D levels tomorrow. If my results come back around normal … 50ng/ml, do you suggest I quit taking 10kiu and return to a maintenance dose of 5kiu?

    You must have missed my 11/23/15 response of “Vitamin D has a lot of impact on muscles.”
    I have not read it but Dr.John J. Cannell, who runs this website, wrote the book “Athlete’s Edge – Faster, Quicker, Stronger with vitamin D” and it focuses on Vitamin D and muscles.     As for “if I have reached 50ng/ml…should I return to a maintenance dosage?”That depends on how is your depression doing? Also the 5000iu is based on an average person’s weight of 150lbs, are you very tall or weigh more than that?

    The vitamin D finally kicked in at full force with me last night. It felt like my bones became strong and my posture returned to normal after plenty of stretching. I’ve been having issues sleeping at night. It’s almost like I have so much energy, but i can’t burn it away because my muscles are still extremely weak. I hope to sleep tonight and I wake up to my muscles becoming stronger. This vitamin D treatment has been a rollercoaster ride. I’ve had bad posture since I was in elementary school and I could never fix it, but it wasn’t a problem at all last night after taking d3. Omg I really want mymuscles fixed now more than ever. I loved wworking out more than ANYTHING! I start college next semester and I feel like I will be ready. I can not wait to update you guys in the future as I will be 100% healthy!

    Denferjr I really appreciate you coming back to give us up-dates. That has been great. You do not know how many people ask “how long till I feel better.”
    I am so glad you are doing better!!!
    Did you ever get your new Vitamin D results?
    Keep in mind I am not a doctor or scientist when I give you advice.
    I would assume your muscles have made some improvement but you still think they have a ways to go. So here are a few suggestions.
    You are a big guy and probably needed to take more than 10,000iu to get better faster. I think 10,000iu will become your “maintenance dosage” or maybe even a little higher. But you also indicated that your sleep is “off” so I am not sure I want to recommend more at this point. I will leave that up to you. (Think magnesium for sleep and not magnesium oxide!) (A quick check of the internet also shows that a calcium deficiency will cause insomnia and muscle cramps.)
    Maybe your muscles just need to be gently exercised to start to get some strength back. For example if you were in a bad accident and were “bed bound” for a while your muscles would atrophy and you would have to slowly work them back.
    I suppose you could still be deficient in some Vitamin or mineral which will not allow your muscles to progress.
    I really do NOT think this is the problem but will mention it anyway. Sometimes Vitamin D supplementation can cause hypercalcemia. The symptoms are •feeling sick or being sick •poor appetite or loss of appetite •feeling very thirsty •passing urine often •constipation or diarrhea • abdominal pain • muscle weakness or pain •feeling confused •feeling tired •bone pain.You would then need to see a doctor.
    You have made my year and I absolutely wish you the best at college!

    No, I did not get my results for vitamin D yet. He is my newest doctor and I feel very angry with him. He does not allow his staff to read the results of your own blood work over the phone. It frustrates me because he wants me to schedule an appointment to get more money from my insurance, just to read my blood work that he already knows is fine. I’m tired of seeing people looking for help and all this doctor cares about is more money.

    Yes, I have increased my dosages a few times for as long as a week. In fact, I have been taking 20,000iu for the past four days or so. I’m thinking of continuing it if you believe it is safe.

    I think all is fine. No other deficiencies or hypercalcemia. I am still unable to guess if my muscle problem is atrophy or they are this weak because of the D deficiency. I have learned through my treatment that other than increasing your dosage, there is no way to rush this. I feel a little tingling in my legs when I am laying down especially in my legs. I am guessing that’s the only indication that the vitamin D is aabsorbing calcium. Last night, it felt like my bones were so strong that it just cracked up my posture into place. It felt very cool.

    Well you may be right in the fact that it cannot be rushed and you have made progress. The only thing I can tell you is the following. A blood level up to 150ng/ml is safe. The safe upper limit to take that is “presently recognized” is 10,000iu. We do know that you would have to take 40,000iu every day for several months to probably/maybe become toxic. If I remember correctly, there have never been any reports of people dying from a Vitamin D overdose and if you overdose and then stop taking all Vitamin D for however long it takes, you return to “normal” and have no ill effects.
    The symptoms of overdose are the same as the one’s listed for hypercalcemia above.

    Is it best to split your dose to half or take it all at one time?

    Once a day, everyday and make sure you take it with food for absorption. (Vitamin d needs a little “fat” to absorb best.) Since you were taking 10,000iu you could just go to 15,000iu a day instead of jumping to 20,000iu?

    I fixed a tilted hip issue today while my muscles were feeling discomfort after stretching to fix my posture. After that happened, I believe my joints became repositioned. I have noticed my jaw muscles become aligned (before they weren’t). This was pretty painful being able to feel my left leg realign itself and balance with my right leg. My body was telling me that things were changing by feeling tingling in my leg. I’m burned out from all of this treatment. I look in the mirror and I can see it that I am very tired and fatigued. Thevitamin d dodoesn’t help with myinsomnia but makes it worse. Please pray for me tonight. I wwish to sleep and tomorrow wakeup refreshed and strong. I hope to turn this into a memory of the past.     I am sorry I am not going to answer any more questions. It sounds very much like you are taking way too much Vitamin D and have now caused yourself to have hypercalcemia or you have an underlying condition and the Vitamin D is making it worse. You should STOP supplementing with ALL Vitamin D and go see a doctor.
    I also warned you about the vitamins and minerals you need to go with it. You being a male, you may need as much as 800mg a day of magnesium.
    You are misinterpreting some of your symptoms as not enough Vitamin D, when in fact they are from something else.

    Nah, there is no underlying problem that I have other than the vitamin D def. I also have not taken too much vitamin D.. I have went to the doctor and I have tested everything from A to Z and nothing except vitamin D showed something wrong. I only have muscle weakness and poor concentration left for my symptoms. If my condition was from something else, then the vitamin D wouldn’t have done nothing at all for me. I have probably had this deficiency as long as elementary school. I think so because it is as far back that I can remember feeling weak and having bad posture. I began taking magnesium 500mg a day. I notice nothing different as its been only two days. I’ve come a long way. I am now well enough to go back to college. I have wanted to return for the past six years. My social worker and some of the staff say that I look like I have improved. But anyway, I begin treatment week 11 of 14 tomorrow. Peace

    Thanks again for the response. I am still improving. My posture is still trying to get better. I have been exercising my neck, shoulder, jaw. I think that once this corrects, my muscular weakness might go away. Oh, the jaw is extremely hard to alignback. You can really feel the pain trying to stretch it too. I would not doubt that i have pinch nerves there and behind my neck. I’ve been having trouble sleeping, but I am getting seen by a doctor for that help. See you if I will have any updates!

    What’s up IAW? I’ve been still improving and I am told by my doctor that I look great! Before, I wasvery depressed and I could not get out of bed. Now, I am finally back in college! I am in my fourth month of treatment and I am still recovering. I still have my issues that are getting better such as my posture and muscle weakness. My jaw is still aligning back (my cheeks are so much more slim than before) and so is my spine. I also no longer take 10,000iu daily. I take 5,000iu everyday now. Could you tell me what is the estimated recovery time for deficiency? It’s obviously not 3 months. Two people have told me that it is 6 months or more depending on how long the levels have been deficient. Do you know if this is true? Thanks

    I hope you are taking a lot of magnesium, somewhere between 500-800mg a day if possible. Do you take any calcium supplements or do you get a lot in your diet?
    Has your Vitamin D blood level been checked at all lately?
    I really do not know how long it will take. I think it depends on the individual and how much damage needs to be repaired.
    For someone of your height and weight, you probably needed to stay on the 10,000iu a day. Did you have a reason for cutting back? Did your depression go away?
    What are you studying in college?

    Nah, no magnesium anymore. I don’tknow if this is true, but i read that it is good to supplement magnesium if you take plenty of vitamin d. No, I have not been checked too recently, but my levels were over 100 ng/ml last December so I dropped down my dosage. I think I absorb the supplement very well. My levels can jump high fast. I plan on seeing a doctor for new blood work at the beginning of next month.that’s why I cut back. My depression is gone, but I do feel unhappy about things here and there. My problem is with my musclestrength. Im still a little weak.. Another question, can pale skin and circle under eyes (I have this) be fixed by supplements?

    You should not have stopped the magnesium. (If cost is an issue, I have heard good things about magnesium chloride and it may be cheaper than citrate.)
    You may want to consider taking a Vitamin d amount between 5000iu and 10,000iu a day.
    You did not answer the calcium question.

    I get enough calcium in my diet. I guess that I can take magnesium citrate again. I would have to wait until next week to get it because I’m broke at the moment. Is there a brand that you prefer on amazon? I bought very overpriced stuff last time from Walmart. Starting school took a very big blow out of my money. I will also start taking a multivitamin too.

    I get different ones. But Now’s listed above I thought was always a pretty good bargain. The amounts in the bottles are big and would last you several months. (You could take either 2 that equals 400 or 3 that equals 600.) Vitamin Shoppe brand you might be able to get in a store.

    I start my sixth month on March 1st. I haven’t forgotten to update once I’m better. I start taking muscle relaxers for my jaw/neck/shoulders on Monday. She said that it will help my muscles from being very tight. She put her hand on the top of my head and moved it in different positions and she said that she could feel it when my neck would crack. I’ll update you guys once I’m feeling great again. Takes 6-12 months to fix damages. I’ve just been very busy with school.

    What’s up? On March 7, it will start my sixth month of treatment. I’ve decided to buy magnesium, vitamin k2, and up my vitamin D from 5k to 10kiu daily. I’m so happy to make it this far and to answer my own thread from almost six months ago, some people it can take a few weeks, 3 months, 6 months and up to a year. It really depends on the damage done to you. Everyone who I have spoken to tells me that the difference of how they feel to be night and day. I’ve even heard a story on how a person’s hair has grown back after baldness. I’ve been busy with class, so I will probably update you guys sometime this month on me. Thanksyou guys!

    I’m a male lol. I’ve started taking the k2 since I was last here. I did research on vitamin D deficiency and I started reading into osteomalacia and I am 100% positive this is what I’ve been dealing with caused by vitamin D deficiency. If you research the recovery time of it, bones are healed and muscle weakness is fully fixed on the sixth month. This is probably the answer people are searching here for all the time.     Denfer just the other day in the blog about tension headaches this statement was made “In fact, Dr. Prakash has made a good argument that in some patients, tension headaches are actually caused from osteomalacia of the skull.” So you certainly are correct.
    If you read this I want to say that a long time ago I gave up on the Vitamin D range and go mostly by how I feel. This means I have a blood level over 100ng/ml. SO what I am trying to say is if you feel better taking a higher amount, (more than 10K) then maybe you should.

    I would take more d3 but my doctor doesn’t like reading my levels that high. I once had 120 ng/ml blood work and my doc wanted me off d supplements. I try to stay around 70-90ng/ml. I think I’m returning completely back to normal within a week or sooner. Today my jaw tension went away and a lot of my energy has returned. I’m in my 6th month and 3 weeks. I feel so much better than six months ago. It is a very long and hard recovery period. I will update again once I am 100%. So for now on, let ppl know that it can take six months to feel better. I will probably return back in a week or two. Thanks again

    Checking in. I feel that I am very very close to full recovery. My posture has improved to about 90% better. In a week I will be at 8 months of treatment. I feel like I may feel myself by then. I’ll keep updating on how things go.

    Hi Denfer!!! Sounds like you are still doing well!
    At this point can I ask how much Vitamin D you are taking now? Do you have any newer blood levels and how much were you taking when you had the test? I read through the thread again and was wondering how much you were taking back when you had a blood level of 120ng/ml?
    I found your postings on another’s question just the other day. Do you still have facial(?) swelling? Did you ever ask a doctor about it? You exchanged numbers with someone and did not follow-up????
    One more suggestion you said an Endo checked you out thoroughly. I would get a copy of the results so you have them to look back on, if necessary, down the road. Meaning if somewhere down the road you do have a thyroid problem, you will know what levels were normal for you.

    Yo iaw. I was doing 5,000iu but I bumped it up to 10,000iu for almost three months now. I am unhappy that there is nothing I can do for this to speed up. When I reached labs over 120ngml I was doing around 20,000 to sometimes 40,000iu & looking back that was a little too much. I haven’t redone vitamin d labs in a while, but I should do it. I haven’t told a doctor about the facial swelling stuff. It has become ALOT better. I think it is being caused by my jaw and neck. It’s such a slow process and since I’ve been deficient for a very long time, I might need 12 months until I’m better. My thyroid is good lol. I was sort of a hypochondriac before I found out its been d deficiency the entire time. I probably get it checked with a basic lab bloodstream at least two to three times a year and I have had my thyroid gland checked and I’ve never had any indication of it being bad.

    I’m in my ninth month of treatment and I feel pretty close to full recovery. I’m now taking 5,000iu daily tab and 20-30 minutes of sun exposure. At the moment, I feel maybe 90% better. All that is left is my stiff neck and jaw to fix. I have no idea how soon it will take to fix. I’m hoping this weekend. I’ll continue to update!

    Hi Denfer!!
    Glad you are still doing well! Is school over until the fall or do you go during the summer?
    Did the muscle relaxers ever help your neck? Did anyone ever do any x-rays? Is there any other reason besides the deficiency causing it?

    I finished the spring semester and next week I am returning to school for the summer. Nah, muscle relaxers didn’t work. They’ve done nothing for me. My doctor refered me to an orthopedic bur I’ve never been called for an appointment. So far I haven’t been told of any other cause for my neck, but taking vitamin d daily and stretching has been working despite it taking forever.
