Hello, I have a 16 year old daughter who runs cross country she has had four stress fractures the last four seasons. We have had every test you can think of ran on her. The only thing that has come back abnormal was her vitamins d levels. Does this sound right? Can this really cause stress fractures like this?

Please refer to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22393172. Also from Dr. Cannell’s blog about this study “The girls in the highest 1/5 of vitamin D intake (food and supplements) had 50% fewer stress fractures compared to the girls with the least vitamin D intake.” In fact, higher calcium intake tended to be associated with more, not fewer, stress fractures, the first time scientists have reported such a finding. The other surprise was that not only was high calcium intake unlikely to prevent a stress fracture, sodas and pop did not increase the risk.”
