What company do we recommend for vitamin D supplements?

Vitamin D is everywhere. Doctors order ten times more vitamin D blood tests today than they did five years ago. Of all the vitamins Americans take, vitamin D is second only to multivitamins. Also, the number of research papers about vitamin D continues to grow every year and has for the last 20 years.

However, a number of negative studies have recently made the news. Vitamin D by itself does not prevent osteoporosis. A large multi-center randomized controlled trial (RCT) of vitamin D in adult asthmatics found the only beneficial effects was a small decrease in the amount of inhaled corticosteroids needed. Another recent RCT found 4,000 IU/day for a year did not lower blood pressure. So vitamin D is not a cure-all.

However, people who take 5,000 to 10,000 IU/day usually notice beneficial effects. Usually, such people experience improved mood, better energy and increased mental clarity. People are taking vitamin D supplements because of the way they feel on them, regardless of the recent negative news.

The Vitamin D Council, with our donors’ help, has played a role in the increased interest in vitamin D. In 2002, I started the Council in my bedroom with a website developed by my son Travis; that website currently gets about 13,000 unique users a day. While my son was setting up the website, I started researching vitamin D manufacturers for purity, contents, dosage and price.

One manufacturer immediately stood out, a small company in Arkansas: Bio Tech Pharmacal. In an FDA approved lab, they were manufacturing high quality 1,000, 5,000 and 50,000 IU capsules at very inexpensive prices. Their product was void of dyes, talc, binders, artificial colors and synthetic flavors.  Bio Tech had also supplied vitamin D to several academic researchers.

Today, Bio Tech Pharmacal is the number one supplier of vitamin D for research use. They have supplied product for researchers at the National Institutes of Health, the Mayo Clinic and the Massachusetts General Hospital, to name a few. In all the published studies using Bio Tech’s vitamin D, the researchers have always found Bio Tech’s product contains exactly what the label says it contains. That’s not true of all vitamin D manufacturers.

Bio Tech also financially supports organizations trying to get the word out like us, Grassroots Health, SUNARC and Vitamin D Wiki. For example, without Bio Tech, Grassroots Health’s large ongoing study of adequate supplementation for pregnant women in South Carolina would not have been possible.

Without Bio Tech Pharmacal’s support of the Council, we could not keep the lights on. They have never asked for one thing in return. They have never asked that their company be hyperlinked to our blogs or news items. They never asked for advertising. Nor did they ask me to write this blog.

You have to get your vitamin D and other supplements from somewhere. Help us out and make it Bio Tech Pharmacal. Either order online or call 800 345-1199. Whenever you order from Bio Tech, you are helping advance vitamin D awareness and helping the Vitamin D Council.

I’ve always been impressed by Bio Tech, and its philosophy towards ending vitamin D deficiency. Whenever I would host vitamin D information booths as part of my advocacy towards ending vitamin D deficiency, Bio Tech very generously provided sample bottles of vitamin D towards this effort. I’m so grateful for the great kindness of the leadership of Bio Tech. It’s rare to see such compassion in an organization. Bio Tech certainly walks its talk! Thank you.

Biotech is my personal favorite brand of vitamin D supplement. When I take Biotech vitamin D, my 25(OH)D level is within a predictable range. When I take the same amount of vitamin D via other brands of vitamin D supplements, I have gotten highly variable results with my blood work.
