Vitamin D status associated with need of respiratory support in surgical patients

Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent among intensive care unit patients, with 70%-80% of intensive care unit (ICU) patients having levels less than 20 ng/ml.

When researchers look at how vitamin D affects ICU patients, they’ve found that vitamin D may be an important influencer on certain outcomes specific to hospitalized ICU patients. A study in 2014 found that higher levels of vitamin D were associated with decreased length of hospital stay, readmission, and mortality.
