Vitamin D levels in ICU patients are associated with length of hospital stay, readmission, and mortality

A new study shows that higher total and free circulating vitamin D and activated vitamin D levels in intensive care unit patients are similarly associated with decreased length of hospital stay, readmission, and mortality.

Previous prospective and retrospective studies looking at vitamin D status in ICU patients have found that lower levels are associated with increased risk of infection, prolonged length of stay, excessive healthcare costs, higher in-hospital mortality, and greater mortality after being discharged from the ICU.
