Vitamin D improves efficacy of photodynamic therapy in experimental breast cancer model

Breast cancer is the second most frequently diagnosed malignancy and the second leading cause of cancer death in women in the United States. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime and more than 40,000 die every year from the disease.

About 20% of women with breast cancer go on to develop cutaneous metastasis (CM), a painful form of locally recurrent cancer. The 5-year survival rate for patients with CM is 20%, and patients with CM often develop resistance to traditional cancer treatments, including chemotherapy and radiation. Due to the severe side effects of current cancer treatments, more effective and less toxic ways of treating breast cancer metastasis are needed.
