Vitamin D associated with insulin resistance in healthy male adolescents

New research out of South Korea found that vitamin D levels were inversely correlated with markers of insulin resistance in a healthy population.

Insulin is responsible for transporting glucose into cells from the bloodstream to provide energy. Insulin resistance is when the body has a hard time utilizing insulin for this purpose. It is common in patients with type 2 diabetes and in those with obesity.

Past research on vitamin D and insulin resistance has mainly focused on individuals with diabetes, a condition in which severe insulin resistance results in the need to administer insulin injections to help the body acquire the needed amount. However, there has been very little research conducted on the more general relationship between vitamin D and insulin resistance in healthy populations.

Interesting. Since insulin resistance is part of metabolic syndrome which in turn is associated with reduced cardiovascular health, this might partially explain better cardiovascular health of pre-menopausal women.

While the research mentioned the possible role of estrogen, I would like to point out that, of course, being female includes many differences from males — including menstruation which reduces women’s average iron levels.
