Vitamin D as adjunctive therapy may improve symptoms of asthma, says new trial

A randomized open-label trial has found that supplementation with vitamin D in addition to the asthma controller budesonide improves lung function in mild to moderate persistent asthma.

Asthma, a chronic lung disease that causes constricted and inflamed airways, is often treated long-term with inhaled glucocorticoids. Glucocorticoids are steroid hormones that reduce inflammation. Budesonide is a type of glucocorticoid that is widely used to treat asthma.

The prevalence of asthma has increased in recent decades making it one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide. The increase in asthma is coinciding with an increase in global vitamin D deficiency, and some research shows that these may be related.
