RCT: Vitamin D helps manage specific aspects of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

In a study the first of its kind, Iranian researchers investigated the effects of vitamin D supplementation on markers of inflammation in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD, occurs when fat accumulates in the liver of people who do not drink excessive amounts of alcohol. NAFLD can be mild, causing no symptoms, or progress to a point that the liver becomes inflamed and scarred.

While many health conditions have been linked to the development of NAFLD, it often develops in people who have insulin resistance (IR). In its earlier stages, NAFLD is reversible.
