Petition to ask the FNB to revise RDA for vitamin D

I’d like our readers to sign a petition asking the Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) to revise the RDA for vitamin D.

Here is the link to sign the petition.

It appears that the FNB made a major statistical error when they arrived at their 2010 recommendations. The paper explaining the FNB statistical error is free to read in its entirety:

Veugelers PJ, Ekwaru JP.A statistical error in the estimation of the recommended dietary allowance for vitamin D. Nutrients. 2014 Oct 20;6(10):4472-5.

I wrote a blog about this paper when it was published:

From a public health perspective, in arriving at a recommended daily allowance (RDA), the FNB needed to know how much vitamin D/day input is needed to get 97.5% of the population above an adequate 25(OH)D level, which the FNB said was 20 ng/ml.

However, in combining the intake studies analyzed, the FNB used group averages instead of individual averages to calculate the RDA. When individual averages are used, the FNB’s RDA of 600 IU/day will only achieve a 25(OH)D level of 11 ng/ml or more in 97.5% of the population. In fact, using the correct statistical methods, the authors estimate, but do not recommend, that 8,895 IU/day of vitamin D is needed to assure that 97.5% of the population achieves serum 25(OH)D values of 20 ng/ml or more.

That is why Pure North S’Energy Foundation, Canada’s largest primary prevention focused not-for-profit organization, decided to create an online petition to call for the reevaluation of the RDA for vitamin D by the Institute of Medicine and Health Canada.

The public health implications of this mistake are immense. We are asking you, the reader, to help amend this error by signing the petition.

When I click on Sign the Petition, it just shows me the blog page again. No petition to sign.

    Hi Carrie,

Thank you for pointing this out to us. Indeed, the button to sign the petition at the bottom of the blog wasn’t linking correctly.

We’ve fixed the link and you should be able to access the page to sign the petition.

  3. Ian says:

    Signed, thanks.

The low level of RDA causes a seriously low recommendation for sun exposure. Particularly in countries like Canada, UK and New Zealand. In some countries such as in Middle East the recommendations for sun exposure are ridiculously low the rationale being the low RDA. Increase the RDA and the recommendations for sun exposure can be increased OR people advised to supplement.
