New potential mechanism suggested for the role of vitamin D in preeclampsia

New research published in PLOS One has found a potential mechanism for the beneficial effect of vitamin D in those with preeclampsia.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a condition that occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy and is characterized by high blood pressure and high levels of protein in the urine. High blood pressure brought on by PE can increase the risk for certain cardiovascular diseases.

Researchers studying PE are interested in vitamin D because of vitamin D’s suggested role in cardiovascular health and blood pressure. Research shows that vitamin D deficiency may increase the risk for certain cardiovascular conditions and that higher vitamin D levels in individuals with preeclampsia and other health conditions may help lower and regulate blood pressure.
