You would not be reading this unless you had an interest in the benefits of vitamin D. For many of you, your interest and understanding has been spurred by the work of Dr John Cannell and the Vitamin D Council.
This next year will be the Council’s tenth birthday, and look how far we’ve come.
Ten years ago, doctors seldom tested for vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D recommendations were low, and it was almost unheard of to dose much higher than 1,000 IU per day. The unanimous recommendation in public health was to avoid the sun. Obstetricians believed vitamin D was dangerous.
Today, we are much further, and I think it’s an opportune time to recognize the hard work of the Vitamin D Council and Dr John Cannell, for our efforts in making change.
In 2010, the Institute of Medicine convened to triple the recommended daily dose and doubled the upper safety limit. Several societies and agencies have publicly announced that now, you actually need a little bit of sun exposure. In 2012, doctors routinely check for vitamin D levels, once a scarce practice. And pregnant mothers are urged to make sure they’re getting enough vitamin D.
These changes in view toward vitamin D and sun exposure are in large part thanks to the efforts of the Council, who have worked tirelessly to bring better awareness of vitamin D to the public. As President of the Board, I know we have great leadership and staff that will continue to push this work forward.
Now, I would like to ask, please, would you consider a donation to allow us to continue this very important work? The Council receives no funding from the government, rarely receives support from foundations, and since what it advocates for – sun exposure – is free, has few business interested in sponsorship. Given such, the Council needs donations from friends like you.
If you, your family and friends have benefited from the work of the Vitamin D council, or recognize the importance of the organization in bring better health and change to the public, please give this holiday season. Either on your behalf or in the name of a loved one. What a nice present to give someone: a donation in their name to the Vitamin D Council.
If you would rather send in a check, you can do so by sending to…Vitamin D Council 1241 Johnson Ave #134 San Luis Obispo, CA 93401
God bless and I hope you had a Merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah and rollicking yuletide, and to others all over the world, a healthy, happy, sunny 2013.
President, Board of Directors of the Vitamin D Council
